Sunday lunches

Paul was a lovely man and a loving grandfather to me. i’ll always remember how he was a source of comfort and kindness to me when I was young. If Dad and Hazel were at work, Id get home from school and spend a few hours just the 2 of us, and he’d usually be peeling some sort of veg for dinner, i loved his cooking! Sundays were my favourite. The smell of his roast lamb with onion sauce will live with me forever (despite my early teenage issue with ‘tubes’ - Hazel and my Dad will get this!), along with his love of the top of his rice pudding!

His relationship with Precious the cat also stands out to me, the way they sort or pretended to dislike each other but definitely loved each other really. Precious trying to steal pieces of meat from his plate whilst he said Grace from the stool next to the table always had me in stitches especially when Paul had to keep one eye on the cat whilst saying it!

When my own children came along and H&P became great grandparents, it was fitting they were automatically called Nanny and Pop-Pop (Kates names for them) and i remember a visit when Max was about 1, he was fascinated by Paul’s false legs that he wasnt wearing at the time. Max found apples in the fruit bowl and thought the perfect place for them was in the inner cavity of each leg so thats where they went. It was very funny and Paul was so good humoured and always so

lovely and kind with the children whenever we descended on their house to visit (cause havoc!).

Paul you will be ever so missed, you were a kind and gentle grandfather and great-grandfather, and your courage throughout everything you’d gone through is an inspiration xxx
